The Proprietary House
As early as 1914 a group of concerned citizens banded together to raise funds in
order to purchase and restore the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy.  This and
subsequent attempts to rescue the historic building from neglect met with failure due
to lack of public support.

The Proprietary House Association was formed on September 7, 1966, for the
purpose of promoting the restoration of the ProProprietary House and encouraging
among the people of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County and New Jersey a sense of
awareness and appreciation of the historical heritage that this building  represents.  In
1967, through the efforts of the Association, the State of New Jersey purchased the
Proprietary House so that it might be preserved for future generations.

Today, after extensive research on the building's history and architecture, the actual
task of restoration is almost ready to begin.  The restoration and preservation of a
building of such scale is an enormously expensive undertaking and cannot be
accomplished without your help. Help with the restoration of this beautiful building and

The Proprietary House occupies an important place in American history as the residence of the last
appointed Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Franklin. He and his wife lived in the great old house in
Perth Amboy from 1774 until 1776.
The mansion was erected in 1762-1764 to the design of master architect John Edward Pryor. It was built on a
sizable scale with the intent to bolster the prestige of its owners, the Proprietors of East Jersey, by convincing
the colonial governor to choose the house and Perth Amboy as his official residence.
Members Desirae and June went  to the Proprietary House for a ghost
tour with Jane Doherty on November 4, 2006. Desirae experienced
Jane Doherty's stomache first hand.
